Who, by the way, learned to read incredibly fast and was soon presented with summarized versions of Moby Dick and Romeo and Juliet by her teacher. I found that really hard to swallow the idea that her reading skills would have progressed so quickly. There are many Cambodian fables and myths as well- including their version of the Cinderella story- which I enjoyed and found very interesting.

As the relationship between Sang Ly and her teacher grows more trusting, she starts to learn things about the rent collector’s past- which makes everything start to appear in a different light. The ending has some very tidy connections, that are emotional but also a tad unbelievable. Through the novel there are glimpses of other aspects of life in Cambodia- a bit about the horrific history of the Khmer Rouge which I know a little of from watching The Killing Fields , a look at life in the countryside when Sang Ly visits family, mention of child trafficking when an orphan girl in the dump faces the threat of being sold into prostitution by her older brother who’s in a gang.

I was puzzled when Sang Ly’s child was given a traditional cure by a healer- and then afterwards seem miraculously better. My western brain tried to figure out how this worked- and my best guess was that the healer fed the child charcoal mixed into paste which absorbed some toxins the child had in its body from living in a waste dump his whole life.

But really, who knows. I don’t have to have an explanation, it’s a story. I really liked the parts about literature, even if they stretched my sense of belief somewhat. Aspects of the story- how learning to read opened up the world for this young woman and her family- reminded me somewhat of The Book Thief. Totally different setting and circumstances, but similar message about how books and knowledge can change lives. But- reading some other reviews and finding out how about the author’s inspiration for this story- how much he appropriated from a poor family who probably never saw any benefit- makes me feel uneasy about liking it.

I appreciate books that introduce me to a part of the world that I was unaware of, and I especially enjoy it when the author weaves the story around things that I can relate with, like literature. If you love how reading opens up your world, expose yourself to the world that is opened up to a woman that learns to read.

Imagine living with mounds of trash all around you and seeing only the shape, size, and color of the discarded items. Seeing opportunity in the form of the daily dumping of garbage that may help you and your child survive one more day.

Then an unlikely teacher enters your world, a woman who you only saw as an extension of the mounds of trash in your life. This unlikely woman becomes your teacher. She teaches you, not only how to recognize letters, she shows you how to read stories, poetry, history, and connect the words to your world. By learning to read, your lens on the world changes, what the dump gives you and what you give back is beyond surviving one more day, you are living for the first time in your life.

Sopeap is the mean, drunk, rent collector with more than one secret. The story really begins when Sopeap sees a book Ki found and brought home for Li to show to their child. Show, not read, because they are illiterate. I was expecting a dark, dreary novel about the sufferings of the poor in a war ravaged country. Despite the setting in a dump, an entire community of people living in a dump the book seems to look beyond the sheer misery of the situation.

Life seems normal for the people in the book. Yes there are money problems and environmental problems but they seem to be taken in stride. Overall, there is a very positive light shining on the dump. The book makes references to several cultural aspects of life in Cambodia, from local remedies to the Buddha.

The Cambodian Buddha is skinny compared to the fat Buddha of China, perhaps a truer picture of the Buddha who fasted and begged for food or maybe a reflection of the realities of poverty being reflected in the culture Other religions do the same,much like a blonde haired, blue-eye Jesus of Scandinavian culture. As Sopeap lies dying, Sang Ly notices that the socks have slipped, exposing scars on Sopeap s ankles.

How would you presume Sopeap got these scars? How might Sopeap s scars or rather their source have influenced her appreciation for the story of the rising Phoenix? By the time you reached the final version in the book s closing pages, had you remembered the original version in the book s opening pages? How had the myth changed? How had Sopeap changed? How had Sang Ly changed? When the story closes, Sang Ly and her family are still living at Stung Meanchey.
